Ras Laffan Petrochemicals Project

Chu Kong Petroleum and Natural Gas Steel Pipe Holdings Ltd. (Stock Code: 01938.HK) has successfully delivered the SAWL (Longitudinally Submerged Arc Welding) pipes for the Ras Laffan Petrochemicals refinery project in November 2023.

This project is operated by Ras Laffan Petrochemicals, a joint venture between Chevron Phillips Chemical Company and QatarEnergy, located in Ras Laffan, Qatar (21°28′N, 039°10′E#). The US$ 6 billion ethylene project will feature an ethane cracker with a capacity of 2.1 million tons of ethylene per annum.

The delivered SAWL pipes have a diameter of 610 mm and a wall thickness of 11.7 mm and 9.5 mm respectively, with external double-layer fusion-bonded epoxy. The pipeline measures 14.5 km in length and weighs 2,230 tons.

This will make it the largest ethylene project in the Middle East and one of the largest in the world, according to QatarEnergy, who will run the project together with Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, on a 70/30 basis in QatarEnergy’s favor.

                                                                  

The newly built manufacture is expected to start its product in 2026, while Ras Laffan Petrochemicals complex will also include two polyethylene lines with a combined output of 1.7 million tons per annum of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) polymer products, increasing Qatar’s overall petrochemical production capacity to almost 14 million tons per annum.

As a corollary of its ambitious plan, QatarEnergy announced that it will proceed with the long-awaited Ras Laffan Petrochemicals complex, which will take part in the UAE’s (United Arab Emirates) gas expansion program to enhance its higher-value petrochemicals exports. QatarEnergy has signed two sales and purchase agreements with Chevron Phillips Chemical Company and also come to an agreement with Germany for the supply of LNG energy which will provide up to 15 years of service since 2026.
