On May 18, 2018, the Hong Kong International Airport reconstruction and expansion project achieved a significant milestone. One of the two parallel aviation fuel pipelines, which spanned 5,200 meters horizontally and were located approximately 130 meters below sea level, was successfully connected to fuel. This achievement sets a new world record in the horizontal directional drilling technology industry.

The project used steel pipes manufactured solely by PCK Zhuhai for the world's longest and most demanding submarine pipeline crossing project, which features the most complex geological structure and construction conditions.

According to a previous report by Hong Kong media, the fuel pipeline reconstruction project, which costs HK$1.3 billion, is a significant milestone in the overall HK$141.5 billion budget for the reclamation of the three-runway system at Hong Kong International Airport.

The report states that the crossing project is located at one end near the busy airport runway and at the other end at Sha Chau Island and Lung Kwu Chau Marine Park, where the White Dolphin and Heron Sanctuary is located.

The project has very high safety and environmental requirements, and the construction conditions are reported to be extremely harsh. The construction site is too narrow for conventional equipment. Additionally, it is required that the drilling mud along the route does not leak out at the seabed. Night construction is also prohibited on Shazhou Island. In addition, the geological terrain is very complex, passing through thick backfill stones, fracture zones, granite, and extremely hard quartzite, among other challenges. Coupled with the extra-long distance of the pipeline, this project is considered one of the most difficult in the world.

On December 27, 2017 and March 9, 2018, two submarine pipeline crossing projects were successfully completed. These projects are the longest in the world and were constructed under harsh conditions and complex geological structures.

According to the Airport Authority of Hong Kong, the project will have no impact on the surrounding environment and ecology. The three-runway system project is on track to open in phases from 2022 to 2024.
